who we are

Tim Small

A former secondary Head, Tim's expertise is in leadership development through research, consultancy, training, project management and authorship. His interest is in the intra- and inter-personal aspects of leadership and learning. He helped to prepare the Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory for national availability and now leads the ELLI Research and Development programme, working with schools and universities in UK and abroad. In 2003-4, he created Space for Transformation and attended the Courage to Teach programme, developed in the USA under the guidance of Parker J. Palmer. Drawing on this experience, Tim initiated and now co-ordinates the Courage to Be... programme.

Alison Riches

Alison was appointed in August 2007 as the Business Development Director for the Courage To Be... project. She has extensive business experience gained from both the public and private sector. Alison has her own learning and development business Dare To which designs and delivers learning and development experiences for corporate clients and provides executive coaching for individuals and teams. Alison also leads on the Education Working Party and Business Development at House of Colour Image Consultants.

Sue Ashby

Sue is a writer, psychotherapist and trainer, and is passionate in her belief that writing can bring about the powerful insights necessary for well-being. Reflective writing workshops allow participants the space and time to explore their own professional practice, find the clarity required to precipitate change, rediscover creativity and learn from others.

Geoff Taggart

Geoff attended a Courage to Teach retreat in Boston after being inspired by the work of Parker Palmer. Geoff is currently Senior Lecturer in Teacher Training at East Berkshire College and has previously worked for the National Foundation for Educational Research and the Campaign for Learning. With a background in primary teaching, he has a long-standing interest in holistic approaches to education. He completed a PhD in the subject of spirituality and education in 2003. His current research interest is the training of early years practitioners in an ethic of care.

Sue Woodhead

Sue is the Courage to Be... Programme Manager, the central point of contact and communication within the network. She is responsible for managing the administration of the team and meetings; supporting planning, organisation and delivery of events; maintaining a database of key personnel and services and disseminating information and news. Formerly employed by the University of Bristol, Sue is now a freelance administrator, who is also responsible for supporting the ELLI Research and Development programme and managing and maintaining the Vital Hub web site.
